Dusting off this Livejournal account

Hi all!

Whoa, it's been... a long time. A loooooong time. But, I have not forgotten about livejournal. I recently was inspired to finally DO something with it, when I read a great original M/M my freece called Captive Prince. I wanted to write her a comment expressing my adoration, so I logged into livejournal. Seeing my last journal entry was from 2007(!) I thought surly I could write something to update my old, dusty journal. So, what have I been up to, livejournal might ask. Well, in general brushstrokes, life so far...

1. I lived for a year in Japan. Came back to California right before the Tsunami.
2. Worked for a time at an IT company back in California.
3. Am now in law school. In Boston. I like it. That's all I will say about that.

I spend all my "free time" (read: procrastination time) writing. I have a few original fics going, characters that won't leave me alone, elaborate world building for two (2) worlds, and what I think are compelling stories to tell. I have also posted some fanfic over at (Mostly for Pride and Prejudice, all rated at most K+). I love getting review notifications, notifications of people favoriting pieces, etc, from They are like little bursts of creative energy.

I think I would like to turn this space into a blog for writerly reflections. I think my boyfriend will appreciate this, as my current system of talking about writing is to talk to him until he tells me I lost him ten minutes ago. I thought about creating a whole new blog, as this journal was really conceived as my GREEN DAY space, but I don't like to bifurcate myself like that. I like the self I was when working on this livejournal and the friends I made then, so I am going to work from this journal.

So I plan on using this space to post (1) reviews on things I am reading and loved, whether books, fanfic, original ebooks, anything (going to do that for Captive Prince soon) (2) thoughts about writing (dialogue, plotting, tension, romance, magic, etc) (3) perhaps specifics on my various original fiction works, as a document of my progress, which will be interesting to me if to no one else.

I will largely keep this space life (and by extension, law-school) free, though if those points are of interest I can send personal messages.

That which thou canst undo.

So I have more ramblings. This one's going to be about Nobuta wo Produce, another Japanese drama.

Nobuta wo Produce is a good drama. Painful at times but with important lessons and -I'm going to say it- good acting. I started thinking about this when complaining about Yamada Taro. What jdramas so I like and why? Well, Hana Yori Dango is the most addictive. But Nobuta wo Produce is the best. The one that actually made me think about life. Specifically, about the way people create identities for themselves, how people are driven by their own self-conceptions in their relation to other people. And, Nobuta wo Produce made me realize that Kamenashi Kazuya can really act.

Okay, plot summary. Kamenashi Kazuya is Kiritani Shuuji, a guy to whom popularity means everything. He has built up his image at school, dating the most popular girl and forming a group of friends. But to him it's all fake, all a game. He partners up with Kusano Akira (Yamashita Tomohisa acting like a cracked out monkey under a strobe light) to make the new, bizarre girl Nobuko Kotani (Maki Horikita) popular, to "produce" her.

I entered thinking it would be Kotani who undergoes the biggest change, but I was wrong. This drama is definitely Shuuji centered and in some ways, although he seems the most "normal", he's the one who has the most to learn. Akira and Kotani's disregard for how they should act according to everyone else is contrasted with Shuuji's extreme need to be liked by everyone. You might be asking, "but Kotani wants to be popular, doesn't that show she wants to conform?" Well, yes, in a way. The drama strikes a balance. Kotani wants to be popular, but she still wants to stay true to herself and resists Shuuji's attempts to change her in ways that make her fake. In ways that make her lie to other people.

So, as contrasted with Yamada Taro, the girls in this drama have strong personalities. In addition to Kotani, we have Shuuji's popular girl girlfriend. She's smart, perceptive, sensitive and plays basketball. It make's Shuuji's fear of her a symptom of his disfunctionality (guilt from lying to her?). The fact she likes him at all confirms what the audience already knows, that despite the fakeness that taints Shuuji's motives he cares about people and deserves our support.

Other pluses of this drama include Shuuji's awesome family, especially his adorable younger brother, and an ending that'll have slashers everywhere raising their eyebrows. Heck even my mother picked up on the vibes.

Here's a picture of the guys -L, Akira. R, Shuuji-

Lastly, I'd like to say I'm really enjoying Arashi's new album Time.

Little sidenote: Both the guys in this drama are from boybands, but neither are in Arashi. Kame is from KAT-TUN and YamaP is from NewS.

Villian, what hast thou done?

Hi Journal! Long time no see!

So. I've decided I can't live without fandoms. That is, without being fangirly about something. Being super excited about bands/books/movies/tv shows makes life so much more exciting. It gives me something to think about, a way to direct my free time to maximize excitement, some passion in life. And passion in any form is awesome.

In any case I've decided to brush off my LJ and write about the stuff that I'm excited/passionate about.

So right now, this leads to Arashi! I really like these guys. I also like how they do so much you can't exhaust all the material. And they're coming out with more now!

I tried watching Nino and Sho's drama "Yamada Taro Monogatari" with my roommates but it didn't work for us. I liked it cause it has Nino and Sho and they're in Arashi and I love Arashi, but the show itself was missing something plot-wise. We decided it was because all the female characters were really lame. The love interest is obsessed with money. The mother of the family is useless and "sickly". The female teacher of the honors class, who could've been really cool, is shy and lacks self-confidence. The only female character that showed potential was the main female character's mom, but then she was mean to Nino who we are attached to because he's the main character and an amazingly nice guy.

Short plot summary: Yamada Taro (Nino) and Mimura Takuya (Sho) are the smartest/most athletic boys at their school. In fact they seem to have "pop idol" status at their school and all the girls are crazy about them. Naturally, everyone assumes they're super rich. This is true of Sho, who has the rich-boy-bored-with-everything character down. But not at all true of Nino. Nino's family is incredibly poor and he has to work super hard supporting his adorable younger siblings and useless mom. Apparently the dad is "selling" paintings in Italy, though no one but the mom holds out much hope on his return. The drama comes as everyone slowly finds out the real state of things in Nino's life, and all their various reactions.

One funny thing about this drama is it would work if Nino's character were a girl. And Sho's the guy. It would even be interesting if Sho was the girl and Nino the guy. Because so far their relationship seems to have the most interesting growth potential and they definitely have the best chemistry. The actual girl is vapid and annoying and obsessed with finding her rich "prince" so she doesn't have to be poor. This might be okay if she had anything else going for her. Something to offer that would make viewers want to see her change and accept a relationship with the pennyless Nino, but as it stands he is way to good for her.

That's what I'm thinking about now. As my mind is focused mainly on jdramas/arashi expect similar posts in the future. Possibly with pictures.

My Chemical Romance Concerto

So on Sunday I went to a My Chemical Romance Concert. It was cool. Even very cool. One might even say so cool I've been listening to my "MCR cncrt" playlist on repeat and having random bouts of concert flashbacks. All this is a good thing.

We had floor tickets. We got there early so we were right in the thick of things. It was a "smallish" concert, only about 7,000 people in part of the Anaheim Convention center. We almost drove into Disneyland by accident, cause apparently all roads in Anaheim lead to Disneyland. That would have been different, ne?

I pretty much watched Gerard the whole time, which was cool cause it means I pretty much could see him the whole time. Even though I only knew the words to Helena and Welcome to the Black Parade, I had a great time. It was a very engaging show. I got completely covered in confetti and there were many loud noises and much fire.

Does anyone else think that moment in Dead! when Gerard merges from the doctor voice back to his own voice... y'know... And in my honest observation/During this operation/Found a complication in your heart/So long... is just totally awesome? Or is is just me?

And I reeeeeeally want to go to a Green Day concert. I'm bummed I missed the shows when MCR was opening for Green Day. I mean, Jimmy Eat World is cool, but MCR is awesome.

Also apparently Gerard's favorite TV show is Battlestar Galactica. Which means he wins even more.

Super glue, anyone?

I still haven't gotten any super glue. Now even the rubber button thing has fallen off. When I type a "T" I'm just hitting naked metal. Is this bad for my computer? My friends think it's funny.

Today I read In Our Time, by Ernest Hemingway. I really like his writing style. I could clearly see locations and understand characters, but there was no excess of language. I guess that's what you always hear about Hemingway. Short, declarative sentences. But the declarative sentences conveyed so much. It made me want to try writing something again.

I've been spending most of my free time looking for Japanese music. It's strange. I used to think lyrics were so important, and now I understand very little and yet I am still able to love the songs. So what is it then that's appealing? Apart from the fact I'm studying Japanese and every time I make out a word or *gasp* complete sentence it's incredibly exciting? How different from the rhapsodizing over lyrics that drew me to Green Day and American Idiot.

My cousin got tickets to a MCR concert. I'm thinking about going. I don't listen to MCR, but he says he'll make me a CD. It could be fun times, right?

Hello hello

Well, it's the start of a new quarter and I'm once again spending much, much time online. I'm taking the final class for my French minor this quarter (After this I'm going to have to start reading French novels or something). It's a "techniques of narration" class. Basically you create a character, come up with a backstory and then write three blog entries for them. The idea is all the characters are living together in the same immeuble in Paris, located in what my friend who just got back from a quarter in Paris informed me is the Jewish gay district, and we're suppose to comment on entries like we're getting to know eachother. So basically it's Role Playing. In French. For credit. I'm pretty excited.

In other news: the "T" key fell of my keyboard, so everytime I want to type a "T" I have to press the little rubber under button thingy. There's really not a more inconvient non-vowel letter that could have this problem. One day I'm going to get me some super glue.

Also, if you have any interest in fuzzy friends of the feline variety, check this out: WTF It's short and pretty much amazing. If you've already seen it watch it again. Pretty much amazing.

Japanese Hair

Hi all!

I’m almost done with finals and am looking forward to break, seeing friends and catching up on TV shows. I finished my internship yesterday. Even though it was only marginally useful and I often felt like a tool, leaving was still bittersweet. I will miss (some) of the people, and at least delivering all those packages and doing all those bank runs made me much more confident driving around LA. Next quarter looks like it should be pretty chill, lots of English classes, my last class for the French minor, and Japanese.

I’ve been reluctant to squeal about my new interests here, since this really was conceived of as a GREEN DAY journal. And all my (really awesome) f-list reflects this, and I didn’t want to bore you all. Nevertheless, I don’t want to loose contact and there’s always the possibility someone will follow me. So while I still love Green Day and can’t wait for their new CD and more opportunities to see them live, I’ve decided to branch out in this journal.

In short, I’ve becoming interested in many, many cool Japanese things. I’m using “interested” here instead of the more power “obsessed”, as I’d categorize this interest as less all encompassing than my Green Day obsession. That is, I’ve yet to read/write any fanfics or spend gobs of cash.

The gateway drug, as I squealed below, was the jdorama Hana Yori Dango. This lead me to Arashi. There’s nothing I can say to adequately capture the adorable dorky hotness of these guys, but this post comes close. They seem to be the Backstreet Boys of Japan. Having been rather oblivious to music during the whole Backstreet Boy/N’Sync explosion, I never “got” the whole boyband thing. On the plus side, I never had a chance to react against the excessive commercialism and packaging.

I’m under no delusions as to their musical prowess. But they have some really quality songs (Sakura Sake, SAKURA SAKE!), and they always make me happy. Which is important, especially during finals.

I’ve been watching more jdoramas and finding more music. It’s great because the other girls in my suite are more than willing to watch with me, and one has succeeded in getting me to watch some anime. I like magic powers and interesting, intelligent plotting and she’s become my gate keeper. It’s great because she’s totally open to hearing about Green Day.

She comes to me the other day and asks, “Hey, do you have Longview by Green Day?”. Turns out she really likes them but she only has “American Idiot, BOBD, and Good Riddance”. Obviously this must be fixed, so I gave her a Green Day sampling, along with a bunch of Nirvana. Then she IMs me saying “Hey, you know this song is kinda about masturbation?” And I’m like, kinda? She’s the perfect candidate for a budding Green Day fan. We watched parts of Bullet in a Bible yesterday (after a jdorama), and she really, really liked Billie. Like really. I’m very excited.

One last thing before I start studying:

Green Day Article-book thingy

Um... has everybody seen this?

So, reading this article I have to point out a few things-

1. El Rey? What is this El Rey? They mean the Wiltern, right? And...

2. Matthew Fox was there? Zach Braff?? I was at this show, and I did not even glimpse these people. Though I doubt that were squished up in the pit like area with us, the place isn't that big, y'know? Though it's possible I just didn't notice cause HELLO Green Day was right there.

3. What do they mean "finally really made it into the city"? Green Day's done made it. It's made. And packed. And wrapped. And tied up with a pretty pink ribbon.

But actually it's a cool article. Lots of biography details, some of which I didn't even know. Bits of interviews with Billie's siblings (!) And a couple cool pictures. Check it out.

"Jim took one look at him and said, 'He looks like he really belongs in show business. Why don't you take him in the studio and see if he can sing.'" Hmmmm, I wonder?

Loveless Icon Post

I've been making icons. Lots, and lots of icons with pretty anime. It helps that I downloaded lots and lots of pictures. Not quite the typical subject for my attempts at photoshop, but if you're interested in seeing the progression of my skills even if applied to something wildly different from Green Day, go ahead and click.
